Asphalt Roofing Shingles

Asphalt Roofing Shingles:

The Most Popular Roofing Solution

There’s a reason that asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing solution. Cost, reliability, and relative ease of installation make them a natural choice for many homeowners. The color and style options make them attractive on many different styles of homes. Additionally, they are readily available in all parts of the country.

What Are Asphalt Roofing Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are typically comprised of asphalt, fiberglass, and ground-up ceramic. Some brands have additional fabricated materials in the mix. The asphalt is the waterproof component, while the ceramic provides the color.

This type of shingle is more lightweight than other roofing materials, like slate or clay; but they cost a lot less. They are also much easier to install.

In some cases new asphalt shingles can be installed on top of an existing asphalt shingle roof, if the existing roof structure is in fairly good condition and can bear the extra weight. Customers may choose this option to save the cost of stripping the old shingles down to the roof deck and to save on the associated costs of that labor. (Check with us to see if this is an option for you.)

Asphalt shingles are available in a variety of types:

Within each type are a wide range of color and texture options.

Roof-2What Are the Benefits Of Asphalt Roofing Shingles?

Asphalt shingles are attractive and cost effective for most homes. They come in a variety of shapes and colors to compliment most traditional home designs. They are popular on pitched roofs, and can be installed on top of existing asphalt shingles (if the existing roof is fully intact), saving money and time.

This type of roofing is also lighter weight than some other types, like metal (especially steel), or clay tile. Most roof structures can support asphalt shingles, even in two layers.
Asphalt shingles come in several different options: 3-tab shingles and architectoral (sometimes called dimensional) shingles.

While 3-tab shingles are layered, they give the appearance of one flat surface. On the other hand, architectural shingles appear more multi-dimensional, and can offer an interesting reflective sheen that adds to a home’s curb appeal.

Here are some of the benefits:

3-tab shingles

  • Several layers of protection
  • Many colors and styles
  • Easier than other types of roofing to install
  • Can be installed on top of an existing shingle roof

Architectural shingles

  • Dimensional appearance
  • Design and color choice
  • Higher wind resistance
  • Stain resistance
  • Manufacture’s warranty up to 30 years

Installing an Asphalt Roof

asphalt shingles roof - Precision Exteriors, Maryland Siding Contractor

Compared to other types of roofing — slate, cedar, or ceramic, for example – an asphalt shingle roof is easier to install. One reason is because the shingles can arrive and be laid down in strips, as opposed to having to be installed as single singles like some of the more expensive options. If the structural system underneath an existing roof has not been breached and can bear the extra weight, a shingle roof may be able to be laid on top of it. This is done primarily to save the time and expense of stripping off the old asphalt. (An experienced technician or building inspector can advise you on whether your roof structure can support this treatment.)
