It is generally not recommended to install two layers of roofing shingles on a roof. There are a few reasons for this:
Weight: Two layers of shingles will add extra weight to your roof. This can put stress on your roof's structure and may lead to damage or even collapse over time.
Durability: Adding a second layer of shingles can reduce the lifespan of your roof. The bottom layer can trap heat and moisture, causing the shingles to degrade faster.
Appearance: Two layers of shingles can make your roof look uneven and unattractive.
Warranty: Most roofing manufacturers will not warranty a roof that has two layers of shingles installed.
If your roof already has two layers of shingles, it is best to remove both layers and install a new layer of shingles. This will ensure that your roof is structurally sound, durable, and looks good. See picture above of the plywood that was under a 2 layer roof less than 10 years old.
When it comes to choosing the right roofing material for your home, asphalt shingles are a popular and versatile option. Learn more about this material.
