Project overview
This was a full residential roof replacement in Cambridge, Maryland, in Dorchester County. The scope covered a complete tear-off of the existing asphalt shingle roof down to the deck, inspection and repair of the sheathing, a new water-management layer, and installation of an Owens Corning Duration architectural shingle roof in the Driftwood colour. Drip edge, valley protection, pipe boots and ridge ventilation were all replaced as part of the same job rather than reused.
Cambridge sits on the Choptank River, and roofs here take wind off open water along with the humidity that comes with it. That shaped every material decision on this project.
Why the homeowner chose Owens Corning Duration in Driftwood
Duration is Owens Corning's architectural shingle with SureNail Technology, a reinforced nailing strip that widens the fastening zone and is rated to 130 mph wind resistance. For a home in a wind-exposed part of Dorchester County, that rating was the deciding factor over a standard three-tab shingle.
Driftwood is a warm grey-brown blend that reads differently in morning and evening light, which suited the home's existing trim and siding colours. Duration also carries StreakGuard algae protection — copper-bearing granules that resist the Gloeocapsa magma algae responsible for the black streaks common on Eastern Shore roofs.
Materials and specifications
Owens Corning Duration architectural shingles (Driftwood). Synthetic underlayment across the full deck. Ice and water barrier in every valley and around every penetration. New aluminium drip edge on eaves and rakes. Owens Corning starter strip at the eaves and Hip & Ridge cap shingles at the ridges. Ridge ventilation sized to the attic's intake.
Where sheathing was found to be soft or delaminated during tear-off, it was replaced with new plywood before underlayment went down. That is measured and priced as it is found, not guessed at up front.
Our process, step by step
1. Free inspection and a written, line-item estimate. 2. Colour selection with physical samples viewed against the house, not a screen. 3. Permitting where Dorchester County requires it. 4. Protection of landscaping, siding and windows before tear-off. 5. Full tear-off and deck inspection. 6. Underlayment, ice and water barrier, drip edge, then shingles. 7. Ventilation and flashing details. 8. Magnetic sweep of the property and a final walkthrough with the homeowner.
Tear-off produces a full load of old shingles and underlayment. We handle cleanup as part of the job so debris never sits in the yard.
Eastern Shore considerations
Three things shorten roof life here: wind off the Bay and its tributaries, summer humidity in the 70–80% range, and salt in the air near the water. Wind gets under poorly fastened shingles at the rakes and eaves. Humidity feeds algae. Salt attacks unprotected metal at flashings and fasteners.
The answers are a shingle with a proper wind rating and a nailing zone installed to spec, algae-resistant granules, and metal details chosen for the exposure rather than for price.
Warranty
Every Owens Corning shingle carries the manufacturer's standard limited warranty. On roofs built to Owens Corning's full-system specification, the Platinum Protection Limited Lifetime Warranty is available as an optional paid upgrade — up to 50 years of material coverage including tear-off and disposal, and workmanship backed by Owens Corning, non-prorated for the first 25 years. It is offered only by Platinum Preferred contractors and must be registered with Owens Corning within 60 days of installation. We handle that registration.
