Why Attic Ventilation Matters on Maryland's Eastern Shore
Humidity. Cambridge sits on the Choptank River, and the surrounding air carries moisture most of the year. Types of Attic Ventilation We Install
Ridge Vents
A continuous vent cut into the peak of the roof and covered with a low-profile cap. Ridge venting exhausts the hottest, most humid air at the highest point of the attic along the entire length of the ridge, which makes it the most even exhaust method available. It is nearly invisible from the ground and has no moving parts.
Soffit and Eave Intake Vents
Intake vents in the underside of the eaves let cool outside air enter low on the roof so it can wash up the underside of the deck and exit at the ridge. Exhaust without intake does not work — a ridge vent with blocked or missing soffit vents will pull air from inside the house instead of from outside. Gable Vents
Louvered vents in the end walls of the attic. Common on older Cambridge homes, gable vents can serve as intake or exhaust depending on how the rest of the system is configured. They are useful where roof geometry makes continuous soffit intake difficult.
