Eastern Shore homeowners should inspect their roof before peak hurricane season (mid-August through October), focusing on loose or lifted shingles, flashing around chimneys and vents, gutter drainage, and tree limbs within 10 feet of the roofline. Why the Eastern Shore Gets Hit Differently
When a tropical system moves up the Chesapeake, the Eastern Shore takes a distinct kind of beating. We're flat, we're surrounded by water, and there's very little between your roof and a 60-mph gust coming off the Bay. Homes in Cambridge along the Choptank River, waterfront properties in Oxford and St. Michaels, and anything on Tilghman Island see sustained wind loads that homes even 30 miles inland never experience.
Salt air adds a second, slower problem: it corrodes exposed fasteners and metal flashing years faster than in inland Maryland. A nail head that would last 20 years in Frederick can start weeping rust in 8-10 near the Bay. That's often where wind damage starts — not with the shingle, but with the corroded fastener holding it down.
The Pre-Season Checklist
From the ground (you can do this yourself)
- Walk the perimeter and look for shingles that are cupped, cracked, or sitting slightly raised — lifted edges are where wind gets underneath.
- Check for granules collecting in gutters and downspout splash areas; heavy granule loss means your shingles are losing their protective layer.
- Look at your flashing lines — chimney, plumbing vents, skylights; any visible gaps, rust streaks, or pulled-away sections are the number one source of storm leaks.
- Scan your ceilings and attic for water stains you haven't noticed before; a slow existing leak becomes a flood under hurricane rain.
- Trim any branches within 10 feet of the roof — most Eastern Shore storm claims we see involve tree contact, not wind alone.

- Ridge cap and hip shingle check — the first things to go in high wind
- Soffit and fascia check, especially on waterfront exposures

- Documentation photos — pre-storm photos of your roof's condition make insurance claims dramatically easier

What Wind Ratings Actually Mean Here
Standard 3-tab shingles are rated for 60 mph. Architectural shingles like Owens Corning Duration are rated for 130 mph when installed with proper nailing patterns. On the Eastern Shore, that difference is not academic — Tropical Storm Isaias produced gusts over 70 mph across Dorchester and Talbot counties, and that was a "minor" storm. If your roof is 15+ years old, it almost certainly predates modern wind-rated installation standards.
If a Storm Does Hit: First 72 Hours
Document everything with photos before any cleanup.
