The Platinum Protection Limited Warranty is an optional upgrade on qualifying full-system roofs. It includes 50-year material defect coverage for shingles, underlayment, and accessories. Lifetime workmanship coverage for the original owner (non-prorated for the first 25 years) backed by Owens Corning — this is critical because if your contractor ever goes out of business, Owens Corning still honors the workmanship warranty. No other tier offers this protection. Transferable once to the next owner if you sell your home. And system coverage for the complete Owens Corning roofing system, not just individual components.

What Does the Owens Corning Platinum 50-Year Warranty Cover?

The Platinum Protection warranty is a system warranty. It does not just cover the shingles — it covers the qualifying Owens Corning components installed together as a Total Protection Roofing System: shingles, starter strip, underlayment, ice and water barrier, hip and ridge, and intake/exhaust ventilation.

What's covered:

• Material defects for 50 years on the shingles and the qualifying accessory products.
• Workmanship coverage for the life of the original owner (non-prorated for the first 25 years), covering installation error — and it is Owens Corning, not only the contractor, standing behind it.
• Tear-off and disposal of the failed roof, plus labor to install the replacement, within the coverage terms.
• Non-prorated period at the front of the term, during which coverage is at full value rather than depreciated.

What is not covered: acts of God such as hail, strong storms or winds above the warranted speed (check your homeowner's insurance); foot traffic or falling objects; damage from improper or inadequate ventilation; damage from alterations made after installation; and non-Owens Corning products.

What Are the Requirements to Get and Keep the Platinum Warranty?

There are requirements on both sides — the contractor's and yours.

On the contractor: only a currently active Platinum Preferred Contractor can register a Platinum Protection warranty. They must install a qualifying Owens Corning Total Protection Roofing System, follow the published installation instructions exactly (nailing pattern, starter course, ventilation balance), and register the warranty with Owens Corning after completion — registration is not automatic, and an unregistered roof has only the standard shingle-only warranty.

On the homeowner: keep your proof of purchase, report any problem to Owens Corning within 30 days of discovering it, and have repairs done by an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred contractor using Owens Corning products so coverage continues; damage from later alterations (structural changes, equipment, solar panels, power washing, coatings) and from inadequate ventilation is not covered. Note that the warranty follows a correctly installed system — if a later repair uses non-qualifying materials on part of the roof, that area falls outside coverage.

Ask any contractor quoting you a "50-year warranty" one question: are you Platinum Preferred, and will you register the Platinum Protection warranty in my name? If the answer to either half is no, it is a different, weaker warranty.
