There's something about a real wood deck. The grain, the warmth, the way it smells after a summer rain. For many homeowners, nothing else feels right. Wood decks do need more maintenance than composite — staining or sealing every 2-3 years — but that's the trade-off for a natural material that looks and feels the way it should. The key is building it right for our climate so the structure lasts as long as the finish.

Signs a Wood Deck Is Right for You

Choose wood if the natural look matters to you. If you enjoy the ritual of maintaining your outdoor space — it's satisfying work for a lot of people. If upfront cost is a factor — pressure-treated lumber is the most affordable decking material. And if you want a specific stain color or want to paint your deck, wood gives you unlimited options that composite can't match.

Wood does require periodic maintenance on the Eastern Shore. Our humidity accelerates mold growth and finish breakdown. If low maintenance is your priority, Composite Decks eliminate that work entirely. But for homeowners who prefer the real thing, a properly built and maintained wood deck lasts 20-30 years.

    Our Wood Deck Options

Pressure-treated southern yellow pine is the workhorse — affordable, strong, and treated with preservatives that resist rot, decay, and insects. It's the most common choice for Eastern Shore decks. We use above-ground rated lumber for decking and ground-contact rated for posts and structural members.

Western Red Cedar is the premium wood choice. It's naturally insect resistant, dimensionally stable, and has a beautiful reddish tone that weathers to silver-gray if left unfinished. Cedar is lighter than pressure-treated, easier on bare feet, and takes stain beautifully.

We also build with ipe (Brazilian hardwood) for homeowners who want the hardest, most durable natural wood available. Ipe resists rot, insects, and fire naturally — but it's significantly more expensive and requires specialized tools and fasteners.

Every wood Deck Building project uses the same quality framing standards: concrete footings, engineered connections, stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized hardware, and proper ledger board installation with flashing.

Wood Decks for Cambridge & Eastern Shore

Wood decks need extra attention in our climate. The constant humidity means wood stays damp longer, which accelerates mold growth and decay. We select lumber grades and species that handle moisture well. We leave proper board spacing for airflow and drainage — tighter spacing traps moisture and promotes rot. We use stainless steel screws and hardware near the water to prevent rust staining.

We've built wood decks across Cambridge, Salisbury, Easton, St. Michaels, and the Eastern Shore. Waterfront properties get extra attention to salt-air exposure. We recommend marine-grade finishes for homes closest to the Bay.
