Most people call us for one of a few reasons. They want privacy — a fence tall enough that neighbors can't see into their yard. They need safety — a pool fence that meets local code, or a yard fence that keeps kids and dogs contained. Some homeowners need security — a fence that deters trespassing on larger properties. Others just want their yard to look better — a well-built fence is one of the most visible improvements you can make to a property.

A lot of people have had bad experiences with fences that rot, lean, or fall apart within a few years. That usually comes down to two things: the wrong material for the location and poor installation. Posts that aren't set deep enough in concrete will lean. Wood that isn't rated for ground contact will rot at the base. Metal that isn't coated properly will rust in salt air. Fencing for Cambridge & Eastern Shore Properties

Fences on the Eastern Shore face constant exposure to humidity, rain, and salt-laden air from the Chesapeake Bay. That's why material choice and installation quality matter more here than in most places. A fence that lasts 20 years in central Pennsylvania might last 10 here if the wrong materials or methods are used.

Fence height rules differ by county, and not in the way you would expect

Dorchester and Wicomico regulate fences in structurally different ways, so a rule you heard in one county may be wrong in the other.

In Dorchester County, fences and walls do not require a building permit at all. They are not subject to setbacks from public ways or adjoining lots, though they must respect traffic-visibility requirements. What Dorchester does control is height. In residential districts a front-yard fence is limited to three and a half feet, and side or rear yards to six feet. In business and industrial districts those rise to six and eight feet. Within 60 feet of the shoreline the limit is four feet regardless of district. Open post-and-wire agricultural fencing for livestock or pasturage is exempt from the height limits.

Wicomico County goes the other way. Fences up to eight feet are exempt from a building permit, and zoning permits fencing up to eight feet in resource conservation and residential districts. It may sit right on the rear or side property line. But it must be set back five feet from the front property line, or from any reservation or easement area, whichever is greater.

So Dorchester limits how tall a front fence can be. Wicomico lets it reach eight feet but pushes it back off the line. Those are not the same rule and they do not blend into one Eastern Shore standard.
